DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implements the project SHERQ Management Plan, develops site-specific procedures and risk controls, and ensures uniform safety standards across all major contractors.
- Administers Permit-to-Work systems (excavation, confined spaces, hot work), verifies utility clearances, and enforces trench safety measures such as shoring, barricading, and signage.
- Performs routine site audits, safety walks, and hazard assessments specifically targeting excavation works, pipe laying, and heavy lifting operations.
- Aligns operations with Malawi occupational health and safety requirements and MPEA ESMP standards, managing controls for erosion, soil, waste, dust, noise, and water protection.
- Directs accident, near-miss, and root-cause investigations, tracks corrective actions, and maintains emergency response plans and drills.
- Leads site inductions, task briefings, and toolbox talks for all personnel while promoting safety awareness campaigns and supervising contractor SHERQ teams.
- Participates in constructability/risk meetings with site managers, oversees GRP piping safety/quality controls, and escalates critical risks directly to the Construction Manager. Compiles monthly HSE statistical reports, tracks man-hours and injury metrics (LTIs, medical cases), analyzes trend data, and maintains official SHERQ compliance registers for project leadership.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Diploma/Degree in occupational health and safety, Engineering or equivalent. Those with a SAMTRAC/NEBOSH qualification; ISO 9001/Lead Auditor qualification will have an advantage.
- 5–10 years experience in Occupational Health and Safety, preferably in a construction environment.
- Good communication skills (Verbal and Written), with the ability to engage and influence others; project management skills, good working knowledge with community stakeholders.
