Job Summary

The Underwriting Officer will provide strategic leadership to the underwriting function within the brokerage, ensuring profitable portfolio growth, effective risk placement, and compliance with regulatory and corporate governance standards.

The role is responsible for overseeing underwriting operations across all general insurance classes, strengthening insurer relationships, optimizing renewal retention, and mentoring underwriting teams to deliver high-quality, compliant, and client-focused service.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Underwriting Leadership

  • Develop, implement, and review underwriting guidelines, placement strategies, and risk assessment frameworks aligned to the brokerage’s objectives and market positioning.
  • Lead underwriting operations across all general insurance classes to ensure competitive, technically sound, and profitable placements.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, including growth, retention, profitability indicators, and loss trends.
  • Drive achievement of agreed renewal retention and premium growth targets.

Risk Assessment & Portfolio Management

  • Vet and approve complex or high-value risks prior to placement with insurers.
  • Ensure accurate risk analysis, pricing negotiations, and coverage structuring in collaboration with insurers.
  • Continuously review accounts performance and portfolio mix to support sustainable growth.
  • Provide technical underwriting guidance to business development and broking teams.

Insurer & Reinsurance Engagement

  • Maintain strong relationships with insurers and underwriting partners to secure competitive terms and service standards.
  • Collaborate with insurers on facultative placements and complex risk solutions where required.
  • Monitor insurer service levels and escalate performance issues to safeguard client satisfaction.

Operational Excellence & Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements, internal controls, and corporate governance standards.
  • Enforce compliance with onboarding procedures, including KYC and AML/CFT requirements.
  • Drive process standardization and leverage technology to improve turnaround times and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure timely preparation of underwriting and portfolio performance reports for executive management.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, mentor, and manage underwriting staff to ensure high performance and continuous professional development.
  • Set departmental goals aligned with the company’s strategy and balanced scorecard.
  • Conduct performance appraisals and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and technical excellence.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Claims, Finance, Business Development, and Compliance teams to optimise underwriting outcomes and client experience.
  • Provide executive management with insights and analysis to support strategic decision-making.

Key Performance Measures

  • Gross Premium Written (GPW) growth.
  • Renewal Retention Rate.
  • Portfolio profitability indicators and loss trends.
  • Debtors Ratio.
  • Compliance and audit outcomes.
  • Net Promoter Score (NPS) / client satisfaction metrics.

Educational Qualifications, Experience, & Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Business Administration, or related field; MBA is an added advantage.
  • Professional insurance qualification (ACII, FCII, or equivalent) is required.
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in general insurance underwriting.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a managerial or supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting principles across major general insurance classes.
  • Proven experience managing insurer relationships and underwriting portfolios.
  • Strategic thinking and strong commercial acumen.
  • Advanced risk assessment and portfolio management expertise.
  • Strong negotiation and insurer engagement capability.
  • Leadership, mentoring, and team development skills.
  • High level of integrity, regulatory awareness, and attention to detail.
