Job Summary

The Consulting Engineer will provide independent professional oversight for various micro- and macro-scale construction projects undertaken by Villages in Partnership (VIP), ensuring quality, cost-effectiveness, and timely completion in accordance with approved designs, specifications, budgets, and quality standards.

The Consulting Engineer will submit weekly progress updates (or more frequently as required) through formal meetings (in-person or virtual) and provide written status reports at least twice weekly.

The Consulting Engineer will act as the primary technical interface between VIP, the appointed contractor(s), and other stakeholders, while remaining fully accountable to VIP for all technical decisions and certifications.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct feasibility studies, site assessments, and comprehensive risk evaluations, accounting for Malawi’s tropical climate, rainfall patterns, seismic activity, flood, wind, and fire risks.
  • Provide expert structural, civil, and/or MEP engineering advice during conceptual, schematic, and detailed design phases.
  • Review architectural and engineering drawings for compliance with Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) codes, national building regulations, and best practices suited to local conditions.
  • Advise on material selection (e.g., local cement products), construction methodologies, and resilient building practices appropriate for Malawi.Malawi economic insights
  • Prepare technical reports, specifications, and presentations for VIP and, where required, regulatory bodies.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (architects, contractors, specialty consultants) to deliver integrated and compliant solutions.
  • Maintain on-site physical presence for inspections and walk-throughs (at least twice weekly) to monitor workmanship, materials, progress, and adherence to approved drawings and specifications.
  • Enforce a rigorous Project Change Order (PCO) procedure, requiring full documentation and prior written VIP approval for any variations or additional work.
  • Monitor and report on health, safety, and environmental compliance in line with Malawi regulations and VIP policies.
  • Facilitate preparation and approval of as-built drawings and operation & maintenance manuals at project close-out.
  • Support the defects liability period by coordinating snag list compilation and remedial works.

Educational Qualifications, Experience, & Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Structural Engineering, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Current professional registration with the Construction Industry Regulatory Authority (CIRA), the Malawi Board of Engineers, and any other relevant statutory bodies.Malawi economic insights
  • Demonstrated proficiency in engineering software including AutoCAD Civil 3D, Prokon, ETABS, MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), and project management tools.
  • Proven expertise in accurate quantity take-offs, measurement of works, and reconciliation of actual progress against planned targets.
  • Minimum five years of recent relevant experience in construction supervision or consultancy on building projects of similar scale and complexity.
  • Immediate availability to commence services as required by Villages in Partnership.
